Drone Charging Stations Deployment in Rural Areas for Better Wireless Coverage: Challenges and Solutions

While fifth-generation (5G) cellular is meant to deliver gigabit peak data speeds, low latency, and connection billions of devices, 6G already on the way, half world population living in rural areas are still facing challenges connecting internet. Compared urban areas, users greatly impacted by income, high cost backhaul connectivity, limited resources, extreme weather, natural geographical limitations. Therefore, how connect difficulties providing connectivity draw great attention. This article first provides a brief discussion about existing technologies strategies for enhancing network coverage their advantages, limitations, cost. Next, we mainly focus UAV-assisted resource-limited regions. Considering limitation onboard battery UAVs electricity supply scarcity some regions, investigate possibility performance enhancement deployment renewable energy (RE) charging stations. We outline three practical scenarios, use simulation results demonstrate that RE stations can be possible solution address especially when they harvest store enough energy. Finally, future works discussed.
